Personalised Puppy Recall Training

1-2-1 training for spaniel puppies from 8 weeks to 6 months

Have you recently brought a new spaniel puppy home? Are you worried to let your new puppy off the lead? Not sure how to go about it?

Are you looking to …

  • Get the best start in life for your puppy
  • Have a better understanding of your spaniel puppy and how to fulfil their breed specific needs to ensure your puppy is happy, content, reliable and safe.
  • Build a strong relationship and teach your spaniel puppy how to focus on you on walks
  • Build solid foundations so that adolescence is easier to navigate with your young dog
  • Feel confident to take your puppy off lead on the field, in the woods, the beach, anywhere!

The key is to start early!

Spaniels are the no.1 breed that I see come to me for help with recall problems

Pet Gundogs still have the same need and drive to do their ‘job’ as working gundogs. Without the correct early input they may struggle to focus on walks, become easily distracted by prey scents and can run off chasing birds or hunting for wildlife.

Puppy owners are often lulled into a false sense of security by thinking that their puppy has a great recall, unaware that this will soon change. Puppies when they are young have a survival instinct which makes them stay close to their caregiver as a source of safety. However, this is only temporary. As confidence grows, and the desire to explore the world increases, the reliability of them following you will diminish rapidly.

Teach Them Young

Don’t wait until your spaniel is nose down at 100mph, chasing birds and forgetting you even exist

I have developed a spaniel specific recall training programme for puppies, giving spaniel owners strategies to be proactive in developing behaviour patterns and building the foundations of muscle memory for a dog that chooses to stay close to you, giving you solid foundations for the future.

What you'll learn

Understand your puppy's natural instincts and learn fun, age appropriate activities to help harness them, providing an outlet for their genetic needs which can be incorporated into your daily walks & routine

How to use reward based training for your spaniel puppy. Building value in a variety of reinforcers

Introduce a marker word and reward specific markers

Spaniel specific connection games

Exercises to gently start building steadiness

Stop and think skills

Recall skills. Create what is known as a ‘Conditioned Emotional Response’ to your recall signal? This is where your puppy doesn’t have to think about their response, it is automatic response as soon as they hear you whistle/call.

You will be assigned homework and training exercises to do with your puppy.

Why train with me?

I have extensive experience with puppies. I trained under Jane Ardern, a leading expert in working breeds and puppy training, and worked with Guide Dogs UK, where I managed the puppy blocks and gained valuable hands-on experience. Having owned dogs all my life, I now live in a multi-dog household with two active, high-drive working cocker spaniels.
